The Portsmouth Police Department
Auxiliary Unit in Virginia is authorized to have up to 100
Officers and currently has 21. The Officers
wear the same uniform as regular Officers and must work a minimum of
24 hours per month or a total of 72 hours per quarter. The
Auxiliary Unit is structured to match the regular Police Department
in all aspects. The Unit is comprised of one Auxiliary
Captain, one Auxiliary Lieutenant, and one Auxiliary Sergeant who
make up the Line Officers of the Auxiliary. The rest

Once accepted, Auxiliary Officer
applicants must attend a 640 hour Auxiliary Police Academy which
lasts approximately 10 months. After graduation they ride with
an FTO (Field Training Officer) for 300 or more hours to have their
final FTO Cycle sign-offs completed. Once completed, the
Auxiliary Officer is DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice
Services) Certified as a Law Enforcement Officer and may then
ride alone. After one year in Uniform Patrol, Auxiliary
Officers may apply for transfers to other specialty units within the
Department. Along with supporting Uniform Patrol, eight
Auxiliary Officers are assigned to specialty units.
Specialty Units include the Detective Bureau as Investigators, the
Narcotics Squad, the School Resource Officers, the K-9 Handling, and
the Strategic Traffic Unit as Investigators. (PHOTO above left): In

Note: This outstanding group
of Auxiliary Police Officers are a great example of a
Department/Unit becoming a "Certification Organization" on their
own. It's a great way to keep track of the many volunteer
hours attributed to the Portsmouth Police Department Auxiliary by
dedicated public service. Thank you, Captain Hyman, for
introducing your Auxiliary Officers to the Readers of this web site
and congratulations on getting them recognized by
the White House through the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards being
offered by President Bush.
