Message from APO Rodney E.
Holmes NYPD 20th Precinct
Auxiliary To all of my
Reserve/Fulltime Brothers and Sisters on the
job "Be Alert.
Be Safe."
- "Go Bag" - I hope all of you are doing well.
Apparently, there might be a hint of terrorist activity this
summer. You who are in Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, Railroad,
NYC Mass Transit, The Ports, and various Government positions,
please be sure to be a little more careful than you normally
are. There is a "go bag" that the OEM and the Mayor's Office
advertised on TV. Make one! Here is the link to find
out more: http://www.nyc.gov/html/ . When
making a kit ... for power outages and the sort... always try to
have an abundance of bottled water, freeze dried foods, Army
rations (if you can get them), first-aid items, extra batteries,
etc. Most importantly ... take care of yourself and your
family.
I hope this
information will assist any and all of my Reserve and Fulltime
Brothers and Sisters on the job.
Be Alert.
Be Safe. APO
Holmes

GRADUATION CEREMONY Held at One Police Plaza Wednesday,
October 8, 2003
In APO Holmes' words: "I started my
Auxiliary classes at the 20th Pct. in June of 2001. We were
supposed to be appointed in September, 2001; then, 9-11
occurred. I was not contacted until April of 2002, to actually
take the Auxiliary test. I took the final exam and
passed. I received my Shield in November, 2003. I got my
uniform voucher December, 2003. Out of my original class of
15, myself and another who is now in the Central Park Auxiliary Unit
were appointed to A/PO status. I am proud to be an

The Day the
Lights Went Out The
Blackout of 2003 August 14, 2003
by Rodney
E. Holmes APO NYPD 20th Pct.
It's funny;
during the "blackout," I wasn't worried. I knew my Unit was
going to be on top of things. I couldn't go in as early as I
wanted because I wouldn't leave my Mom (of 68 years) alone in her
house unless there was someone else there; so I waited for my
sister. Anyway, by the time I got to the Precinct, we had
traffic control in three locations. I was utilized in the
fourth location. You see, we have an outstanding group of
Auxiliary men and women on the 20th Pct. who are dedicated to
making the neighborhood safe for everyone.
When it came to the
"blackout," we had a very good turnout. Out of our 20-25
members, about 16 showed up for duty well before Boro called to
mobilize us; we were on the streets of New York by 1700 hours, along
with NYPD Officers, all hoping that the electricity would come
on before nightfall. When it didn't... the NYPD and its
Auxiliary Units were still on top of things.
Road flares were used to light up the streets of New York City, and
Units from the "Roaring Twenty" (or the "Mighty 2-0" as I like to
call our Unit) were there.

About Rodney E.
Holmes Auxiliary Police Officer New York Police Department, 20th
Precinct Because of 9-11, the process of becoming an
Auxiliary slowed down; but I am now proud to be an APO of
the NYPD
Let me give you
my full account of my Auxiliary service. I started my
Auxiliary classes at the 20th Pct. in June of 2001. We were
supposed to be appointed in September, 2001; then, 9-11
occurred. I was not contacted until April of 2002, to actually
take the Auxiliary test. I took the final exam and
passed. I received my Shield in November, 2003. I got my
uniform voucher December, 2003. Out of my original class of
15, myself and another who is now in the Central Park Auxiliary Unit
were appointed to APO status. It has been a long
process for me, but I am proud to be an "Auxiliary Officer in the
NYPD" -hopefully the first of many steps for me in Law
Enforcement.
So far, I have marched in the
St. Patrick's Day Parade, and I attended the APBA's April 2002,
Memorial Service (this made me extra proud!). I have directed
traffic on the Henry Hudson Highway in -15 degree weather and worked
other various traffic duties in our house. I love it. I
have at times volunteered up to 70 hours a month (I have a seasonal
job.)
