Arkansas Faulkner
County Sheriff's Reserve Unit By Reserve Lieutenant
Randy Higgins Commander, Faulkner County SRU Photographs provided by the Faulkner County Sheriff's
Department Reserve Unit
As the Commander
of the Faulkner County Sheriff's Reserve Unit, I am very proud of
its participation in Law Enforcement in our community.
Following is a brief overview of our Unit. (Photograph left: Commander, Reserve
Lieutenant Randy Higgins)
The Faulkner County SRU is
fortunate to have a Sheriff who is very supportive of the Reserve
Unit. Under the leadership of Sheriff Martin P.
(Marty) Montgomery, the membership currently totals around 35
certified Reserve Officers. Leadership is comprised of a
Commander, a 1st and 2nd Reserve Lieutenant, and four Reserve
Sergeants. The Reserve Commander is liaison directly to the
Sheriff and/or Chief Deputy.
The Faulkner County SRU is
incorporated as a non-profit organization and receives no tax funds
either directly or through the Sheriff's Department. The
Unit works four major community events annually from which the event
organizers provide donations to the SRU. The SRU provides
hand-held radios and Stinger flashlights to all Reserve Deputies;
however, all other duty gear, uniforms, and firearms are
provided by the individual Officers. The SRU has also
purchased and fully equipped two patrol cars for the sole use of the
SRU. (Photograph right: Two patrol cars

Christmas Parade)
The annual Faulkner County
Basic Police Course begins each January and is a 120-hour certified
course for Reserve Officers, Part-time Officers, Detention Officers,
and Constables. The class is usually comprised of around 30 to
40 Officers, half of which are from the Faulkner County Sheriff's
Office and the other half from agencies in the surrounding
areas. The class instructors are certified Training Officers
from the Faulkner County Sheriff's Department, from the Conway
Police Department, and from the Arkansas State Police. The
2002 class was one of the largest classes in recent years due in
part to the enthusiasm of many in the community to participate in
Law Enforcement in the aftermath of the events of September 11,
2001. (Photograph upper left: Patrol Sergeant
