On September 11, 2001, as we all know, our world changed.  Our jurisdiction is located just 5 miles from the World Trade Towers and is considered one of the best points in New Jersey from which to observe New York City.

Well, as you can imagine, our Township was thrown into turmoil from the influx of security needs as well as from the influx of vehicular and pedestrian traffic of citizens trying to get a glimpse of this horrific event.  For example, one particular viewing site in town (which is designed to hold a maximum of 500 - 600 people) had 80,000 people in it in one day.

Being one of the Sergeants working that day, I immediately had my Dispatch reach out to see if any Auxiliary Officers were available.   It is with great pride that I tell you about six Auxiliary Officers who left their places of employment and left their families to respond immediately to the aid of their Department and of the residents of West Orange, New Jersey, and of New York, New York.

All of them put in an average of 10 hours that day.  And, they returned the next day to assist with the Traffic details at the North Jersey Blood Bank and other "high volume" areas.  It is through true dedication like this that you see the true American Spirit come out.  Several of these Officers also assisted in "searching at ground zero" in days to follow.

The six Officers are A/O David Squires, A/O John Burke, A/O Jason Forman, A/O Jamie Cicerone, A/O Bob Cell, and A/O John Belluardo.
