Located at the
entrance of Forest Park at the Tennis House, the Park Rangers
operate 16 hours a day, seven days a week. The Rangers are
headed by Chief Joseph F. Luvera, assisted by Chief Deputy William
L. Johnson, Jr.
The Springfield Park Rangers
provide a full range of public safety services. These services
include cruiser patrol, walking beats, bike patrols, search and
rescue, certified police canine, and fire safety in a park
environment. They also provide public safety
awareness programs. The Rangers also maintain a close
relationship with the local and State Police agencies.
All Park Rangers are trained
and qualified officers sworn in under
Massachusetts General Law, and
they have full police powers. Public Safety personnel
include: Chief, Deputy Chief, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Corporals,
Officers.
The Mission of the Springfield
Park Rangers is to provide public safety and to preserve and protect
the tranquillity of open space, including all natural
inhabitants, vegetation, waterways, and they encourage passive
recreation to all who visit the City of Springfield's natural
splendor in its Public Parks.
All Park Rangers are trained
in medical intervention, and are on-call daily and evenings.
Direct emergency lines are linked to both local and state agencies,
as well as ambulance services.
The Rangers use a computerized
record and reporting system. All incidents are classified and
reported according to the FBI Uniform Reporting System.. The Park
Rangers encourage accurate and prompt incident reporting by victims
and witnesses.
