About the
Rushville Police Department
Reserve Unit

The Rushville Police Department Reserve Unit consists of 8 volunteer Officers supervised by Reserve Lieutenant Floyd A. Cameron.  Lieutenant Cameron has been a member of the Reserve Unit since the summer of 1968, and is currently in his 40th year of Service to the City of Rushville as a Reserve Officer.

inrushvillecameron157.png inrushvillemayorbostic.jpgReserve Officers supplement the 13 full-time, sworn Officers of the Department who serve under Chief Ron Cameron (pictured left) who was reappointed on January 1, 2008, after being recalled from retirement.  Chief Cameron told NRLO that he appreciates the service that the Reserve Officers provide to the city each year.  Chief Cameron also started his career as a Reserve Officer and had been promoted through the Ranks to Chief before retiring in 1989, after 21 years of service.  Chief Cameron kept active in Law Enforcement serving the State in many capacities during his retirement period.  Current Mayor Merv Bostic (pictured right) requested that Chief Cameron return to the Department in January, 2008.

The Unit currently has 8 NRLO Members.  Lieutenant Floyd Cameron told NRLO, "Our Unit is proud to be a 100% NRLO Unit, and we enjoy the web site.  We have 2 new recruits going through their Pre-Basic Testing, Physical Tactics, and Firearms Training.  They will then have to go through their Probationary Period.  When the new recruits complete this, the Unit will be back to 10 total, and we are planning to add 2 more."   More on the Unit.

Reserve Lieutenant Floyd Cameron Receives "President's Call to Service Award" (Lifetime)
from The White House for over 40 years of Volunteer Law Enforcement Service

On May 3, 2010, Rushville Police Department's Reserve Lieutenant Floyd Cameron was presented the "President's Call to Service Award" (lifetime) at the Rushville Board of Works meeting.  This lifetime President's Volunteer Service Award is bestowed upon volunteers who have donated at least 4,000 hours to their community and country.  From 1969 through 2009, Lieutenant Cameron has donated 8,988 hours to the community of Rushville through his service with the Rushville Police Department. The Award was accompanied by a stunning lapel pin and a letter from President Obama commending him on his volunteer achievements.

Holding the framed "President's Call To Service Award" and letters from President Barack Obama and NRLO are (left to right) Reserve Officer Gary Cameron, Chief of Police Ron Cameron, and recipient Reserve Lieutenant Floyd Cameron. Representing two generations of Camerons who are serving the Rushville Police Department, Gary is Lieutenant Cameron's son, and Chief Cameron is his brother. There are actually three generations who have and are serving the community of Rushville as Lieutenant Cameron's grandfather also served the Department as a Police Officer.  Also, his uncle was a Rushville Fireman, and his newphew is now a Rushville Fireman.

Police Chief Ron Cameron said during the presentation:  "In late December of 2009, Reserve Lieutenant Cameron was notified by National Reserve Law Officers Association that they would be nominating him for the 'President's Call to Service Award.'  Floyd has been a tremendous asset to the Rushville Police Department for the past 40 years, assisting with routine traffic patrol; the Rush County Fair; Halloween parades; and the 4th of July activities.  Another one of his main duties for many years has been to coordinate the security for the Rushville High School's Athletic programs including basketball, football, and soccer games.  This in itself has been a huge undertaking, and all of us here at the Police Department appreciate his hard work and the time he has taken to get all of those activities covered."

In NRLO's presentation letter to Lieutenant Cameron, it was stated in part, "NRLO is proud to have been the "certifying organization" in securing this prestigious White House award created for Reserve Lieutenant Floyd Cameron in recognition of his volunteered time as a Reserve Law Enforcement Officer."  It was also stated, "It is noted here that Reserve Lieutenant Cameron's participation in Volunteer Law Enforcement has played an important role in the history and success of today's Reserve Law Enforcement."  In conclusion, the letter stated, "On behalf of NRLO and of its members across the nation, we salute you, Lieutenant Cameron.  You are most definitely one of the pioneers in Reserve Law Enforcement, and you are an excellent example of one of this country's "Ultimate Volunteers."

More on the Rushville Police Department Reserve Unit ...

Rushville is located approximately 40 miles east of Indianapolis.  Up until March of 2005, Rushville covered a one-square mile area.  That area more than doubled when a city annexation took effect.  The new area extends approximately one mile south and one mile southeast of the previous city limits.  The south and southeast areas are separated by farmland that is not included.  The number of citizens in the City of Rushville increased from 6,000 to 6,700.

Img543.jpg

Rushville Reserve Police Officers have the same Police Powers as full-time Officers and assist them with Patrol and Investigative duties.  The Reserve Officers work special details, atheletic functions, and parades which free full-time Officers for other duties. The Reserve Officers carry personal pagers and can be called on to assist during emergencies or manpower needs.  The Reserve Unit also has its own fully equipped Patrol car which is pictured at right.

To become a Rushville Reserve Officer, you must attend and pass a 40-hour Pre-Basic Class, 20 hours of Dispatch Training, and ride with a full-time Officer for 100 hours.  To receive driving privileges, Reserves must then drive with full-time Officers for another 40 hours while they are being evaluated.  After the evaluation and clearance from the Chief of Police, they are permitted to Patrol alone.  Each Reserve Officer is then required to maintain monthly work hours and yearly training requirements.

The Rushville Reserve Police Unit is considered a valuable asset to the Department and is valued by each member of the Department.
