Captain Mantkus
was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He Moved with his
parents to Spokane, Washington, where he earned an
Engineering degree and became a Trouble Shooter for
General Electric in Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Northern
Idaho and Western Montana. Mantkus had his own engineering
office in Spokane. In his own words: "Tired of
sitting at a drawing board all day and half the night plus jobs were
running slow, I decided to move to California (Los Angeles
area). There I partnered in a Lincoln/Mercury dealership. When the
gas crunch hit, I sold and went to Toyota. I Retired from
Toyota Dealership in Pasadena, CA ( 3rd largest Toyota dealership in
USA)."
Highlights:
Decorated WWII
and Korean Veteran. President Kiwanis Club. Worked with
Chamber of Commerce in Pasadena, CA. Moved to New Mexico and
later joined the Luna County Sheriff's Department. Made
Lieutenant as Training Officer in 1990. Made Captain and Chief
of Reserve Division in 1992. Became Director of Training for
NRLO in September, 1996. Worked all sections of the Sheriff's
Department including jail, transporting prisoners, drug
interdiction, and patrolling U.S. Mexico Border. Successfully
campaigned for use of Reserve Officers (and for their training) with
the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy.
Ambassador with the Shrine of
New Mexico. The Shrine takes care of orthopedic and burn
children from New Mexico and Mexico (getting them to clinics and
hospitals). Citizen of the year (Deming, NM, 1996) cited for
donating over 2000 hours per year to the Luna County Sheriff's
Department. Lions Club Humanitarian Award (saved baby while on
duty with Sheriff's Department).
